ANAEL’S WORDS troubled Raphael, and he kept reviewing them over and over as he and Uriel escorted Lady Michaels back to her home. As soon as they left her airspace, he turned to Uriel. “What does it mean? Why would Anael say those things? Does she want us to be destroyed?”

Uriel hovered in midair for a moment. “That wasn’t Anael. That was Metatron speaking through her. He is an AI. Perhaps he doesn’t quite understand?”

“You don’t believe that.”

“No. I think something more serious is wrong and that Madam Abraham is at the heart of it.”

It was completely the opposite of everything Raphael believed in. Angels were more than mere automatons. They needed to be able to think and feel to better serve the people of Heaven. That was the argument Samael would make, once they could go before the Board with a proven, safe network.

“Uriel, we have to find a hacker. We have to stop this.”

“Calm yourself, Raphael.”

He hated this distance between them after their earlier intimacy. Raphael wanted to touch Uriel, to make sure that moment hadn’t been nothing more than a dream. But they could not. He’d nearly given himself away in the Boardroom, shocked at what he’d heard. “I know.”

Uriel suddenly straightened, his eyes glazed and head titled to one side in the pose characteristic of receiving a network transmission. “The token has been returned. I need to meet my sister.”

“Do you want me to come with you?” Uriel’s interaction with Serafina hadn’t gone very smoothly. Raphael worried what Uriel would say unchecked.

“No, this is something I need to do alone. I will find you at headquarters.” Uriel dropped a few feet and banked right, spiraling downward while Raphael climbed air farther away from him.

It was just as well, because as soon as Raphael entered headquarters airspace, a ping arrived on his account, summoning him to his superior’s office. Without the Angel Network, he could be surprised by things like this. Then again, he preferred having his own mind over being constantly in the know.

He landed at the dock and nodded at the others leaving for their shifts. It oddly felt like he had a sign painted on him—called to the commander’s office.

Raphael tapped on the door and it slid open for him. He walked in to find Cassiel 3415, the leader of this Throne of the Morality Crimes Division, waiting behind his utilitarian desk. This room had no color to it, looking drab and dull, like most of the interrogation rooms. You didn’t want to give your suspect anything to distract them from the purpose here.

“Ah, Raphael 3029. Please sit.” Cassiel’s eyes had the glazed look that meant he was otherwise occupied on the network. His fingers twitched, making selections in the air of data Raphael could not see.

He sat. Raphael tried not to shift in the hard plastic chair, but it prodded against his back, irritating his shoulder blades where his wings were tucked in. Raphael settled in the best he could and waited until Cassiel finished his business.
